We’ve done our research and found our favourite adventure activity picks perfect for the summertime, and all within easy reach from a Breeze Holiday Park.
Life’s a Beach
Start: BIG4 Breeze Holiday Parks Rainbow Beach
Kick off from BIG4 Breeze Holiday Park - Rainbow Beach, drive through the town and head to Inskip Point, hop a barge and you’re there. A day of adventure 4WDing on the world’s largest sand island awaits with so many incredible sites to see on the heritage listed K’gari (formerly Fraser Island). Choose your own adventure on the island; head along the front beach (also known as 75 Mile Beach) you’ll come along Eurong, Happy Valley, Eli Creek and the Maheno before you reach Tukkee warroo (Indian Head) and the Champagne Pools.
If you want to go inland, follow the Central Lakes scenic drive - this will take you through to central station and the infamous Lake Mackenzie. All of these can be achieved in a day, but we would recommend picking 2 or 3 places that you really want to see to make sure you have enough time to enjoy them. Tours are also available if you want something guided, just ask our friendly team at reception for their recommendations!
Top tips:
- Check the tide times before you go, there are many places along the beach such as Hook Point that are only passable at low tide.
- Lower your tire pressure, this will allow you to hopefully avoid being bogged and you will be able to drive better on the softer sand.
- Driving lower on the beach will be easier as the sand will be harder from the ocean which will give you a smoother trip through.
- If you’re heading to Eli Creek, take a floaty, walk up as far as you can, and the current will float you right back to the ocean.
- Be dingo safe & make sure you abide by the imposed speed limits.
To the Pinnacle and Beyond
Start: Breeze Holiday Parks - Grampians or Breeze Holiday Parks - Halls Gap
Hiking is one of the most popular activities for those visiting the Grampians region, with the Pinnacle Walk and lookout taking the crown for most iconic. At the end of the hike, you’ll be rewarded with the stunning vista of Halls Gap and the many peaks of the Grampians region. During Spring, wildflowers are abundant filling the park with bursts of colour. A diverse range of wildlife call the national park home, so be on the lookout for a koala, a kangaroo, skinks and snakes and potentially a sneaky echidna!
If bringing the kiddies, then the easiest route is through the Sundial car park. Expect this hike to take you approximately 2 hours for a round trip (this includes time to enjoy the view once you arrive) as it is 4.2km (2.1 km each way). If you want something more challenging, then begin the hike from Wonderland car park; the ascent through the Australian ‘Grand Canyon’ of the Grampians is more difficult, as the walk then continues through the Silent Street and then rises to the Pinnacle. The final option for this hike is to begin at Breeze Halls Gap, this transforms the walk into a 9.6km nearly 5-hour return walk. This way will also take you through the Venus Baths, Splitters Falls and then connects through to Wonderland car park.
Top tips:
- Take lots of water and snacks with you on your hike.
- Slip, slop, slap, don’t forget all your sun protection products, and reapply as the day goes on.
- Wear sturdy shoes as there are some water-crossings and some rock hoping will be required. Take care on rocky areas as they can be slippery.
- Check the conditions before you set out, bushfires can be common in the area, so make sure that the conditions are favourable for your hike.
- If you are going by yourself don’t forget to inform someone of where you are heading, your safety is important.
Dive Below
Start: BIG4 Breeze Holiday Parks - Bargara
Extraordinary marine life awaits on Lady Elliot Island; swim with the famed manta rays, or witness a hatchling turtle scale the beach, as this island is home to over 1,200 different marine species. A short 30-minute flight straight from Bundaberg, you’ll arrive on the island and then it’ll be time to dive into the ocean. Snorkelling is easy on Lady Elliot as you can head straight out from the beach, or alternatively you can book a snorkel safari of a guided snorkel/glass bottom boat tour. The sheltered lagoon and coral outcrops are perfect for little explorers, making Lady Elliot one of Queensland’s best family friendly snorkelling spots.
If you are more experienced and have a dive certificate, then you will be able to explore the island more deeply. There are 20 different dive sites around the island and two dive tours are conducted daily.
Top Tips:
- Be mindful of the environment that you are in and leave only footprints.
- Check the conditions before you head into the ocean, tides and weather patterns can impact the quality of your time spent in the ocean.
- Slip, slop, slap, don’t forget all your sun protection products, and reapply as the day goes on.
- Consider using sustainable products so that you are not releasing any harmful chemicals into the environment you are swimming in.
- Manta Ray numbers are at the highest between June and September, turtles come to nest between November and February and hatch between February and April. So if you want a better chance to catch one of those species make sure you book during those months.
Throw in a Line
Start: BIG4 Breeze Holiday Parks - Busselton
Busselton boasts some of the best fishing spots in Western Australia, with an abundance of species, crystal clear waters and dazzling beaches. All experience levels are catered for in Busselton with many different locations including the Busselton Jetty and offshore. There is a small fee to enter the jetty and is easily accessible from the centre of town and there are over 300 marine species that call this area home. You can target shallow water species here such as tailor, yellowfin whiting, and herring. If you want to head out further along the jetty there are the chances you may catch larger varieties including mulloway, snapper or southern bluefin tuna. While you’re there don’t forget to pop to the end of the jetty to visit the underwater observatory where you can get even closer to the underwater world.
If you’re looking for more of a beach setting, then there are plenty of great spots available, you’ll want to look for a great gutter (a pocket close to the shore, that has a sand bank enclosing it) that is open on one end to the ocean. This will trap the fish into a smaller area and make them easier to catch. In a beach location you would be looking at yellowfin whiting, king George whiting and tailor. The Busselton Foreshore Beach or Busselton Beach are great location options and perfect for the whole family to enjoy!
Top Tips:
- Slip, slop, slap, don’t forget all your sun protection products, and reapply as the day goes on.
- Pick the right bait, if you’re wanting to target a particular species then make sure you use the right bait, for example if you are targeting Tailor, they love a pilchard, whiting usually prefer a sand worm.
- Check the size of your catch, there are size limits that govern how big or small the fish needs to be for you to be able to keep it, so make sure that you are familiar with the requirements around the species you are targeting. You can head to the link here for more regulation details.
- Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times for fishing as that is when the fish are most active.
